Old Austin: Downtown Parking Lot in 1952

Written by Ken Altes

Ralph Yarborough was a liberal Texas politician, ran for Texas governor in 1952 and 1954, and served as US senator from 1957 to 1971. Wikipedia says: “He was the only southern senator to vote for all civil rights bills from 1957 to 1970… known as “Smilin’ Ralph” and used the slogan “Let’s put the jam on the lower shelf so the little people can reach it” in his campaigns.”Yarborough for Gov vintage austin cars

Rolls Royce Silver Shadow in Field Halfway to Bastrop on 71

Looking pretty good. The 70s were rough for Rolls: Quality was the pits and the cars were nightmares to keep on the road. Rolls Royce Silver Shadow, East of Austin TX

Demented, Scary Hot Rod at Lonestar Round Up

Written by Ken Altes

From last year’s Round Up, this stunning and brilliant hot rod. The 1937 Hudson grille and E&J Type 20 headlights are remarkable for sure, but upon close examination, the metal surfaces of the air cleaners, valve covers, etc., are intricately decorated with skulls, etc. I don’t know if they are etched or applied, but the work is outstanding. One of my favorite, and memorable, cars at the show.Scary Hot Rod at Austin's Lonestar Round Up Scary Hot Rod at Austin's Lonestar Round Up air cleaner detail Scary Hot Rod at Austin's Lonestar Round Up detail, skulls Scary Hot Rod at Austin's Lonestar Round Up engine Scary Hot Rod at Austin's Lonestar Round Up ornamentScary Hot Rod at Austin's Lonestar Round Up front
