Taken October 16, 1951, I was surprised to learn that these vans were designed by Raymond Loewy (1953 Studebaker Starlight and Starliners, Studebaker Avanti), and available in multiple forms from 1938 until 1975. The chassis and engines were straight from their trucks.
Great find on E. 3rd St yesterday. Sturdy and cheap, they made almost 76,000 KB-5s from 1947 to 1949. Cost $1455 new. More specs here. I noticed I could see a bright engine block through the front grille, deciding it was not a runner. Then, I found a radiator mounted behind the cab. Curious.
Roland caught me taking these pics, asked me if I liked the truck. Justifiably proud of his new machine, and just back from a repainting, he said it’s powered by a 345 cu. in. V8. Thanks, Roland.
