Corvair Monza Convertible in S. Austin

Written by Ken Altes

I knocked on this owner’s door (I rarely do that) but he was kind enough to tell me a bit about it, most of which I promptly forgot including the year although this body was made from 1960 to 1964. Really pretty color combo. Engine was somewhere else, getting rebuilt. These are the only mass produced rear, air-cooled engined cars ever in US history. They are flat (boxer) aluminum sixes, like Porsche.Corvair Monza Convertible posted Corvair Monza Convertible posted

This truck was in this same spot at the entrance to the race track from the pits at the last Corinthian event at Texas World Speedway in College Station.  Don’t miss the vintage races at Austin’s Circuit of the Americas hosting more than 400 vintage race cars the last weekend of October.  See COTA link at right.
