This beauty was parked on E Austin outside the Handbuilt Motorcycle Show.
I learned to drive in Pittsburg, Texas, on a 1946 Ford flatbed truck and a 1960 Ford sedan. I photographed this one in central East Austin, Texas. Note the Half Moon headlight chrome covers, first used during WWII to hinder detection by aerial reconnaissance and bombers. Also, they were used to protect headlamps from damage in combat environments, and to protect the headlights for race cars. To me, they are just cool.
This was my first car. It was a white 1962, with an early Chevy V8 with solid lifters and a three speed Chevy transmission. It was fast and put me in the hospital for weeks. I told this story to Ron Shimek, and he said his first car was a 1961 Alfa Romeo 2000 also with the same Chevy 283 V8 in it. His car survived his ownership, mine did not. These are very handsome cars designed by Giovanni Michelotti. Visit Ron at his shop in North Austin.
