Custom 1957 Ford Ranchero in Liberty Hill

Written by Ken Altes

1957 was the first year for the Ranchero.  The side trim for this mild custom I found in Liberty Hill, Texas (just outside of Austin) is from a 1958 Ranchero.  It has a slightly greater load capacity than the F-100 half ton pickup.  Love the spider web image painted on the hood. 1958 Chevrolet Impala Sport Coupe in Liberty Hill, Texas

First year for Impala.  Also, new for this year were an X frame replacing the perimeter frame, and full-coil or air ride suspension systems replacing leaf springs at the rear.  This car would have originally been equipped with a 283 or a 348 cu. in. engine.

1957 Dodge Royal Lancer Hardtop at Denver Museum

Dashing, sleek and powerful. 1957 should have been a great year for Chrysler products. They had iconic Hemi V8 engines, new torsion-bar front suspensions that were superior to GM and Ford, and the excellent Torqueflite  automatic transmission. Yet, the bodies rusted out and fell apart, leaked water at the windshield posts, torsion bars broke, upholstery tore, seat springs popped through, paint flaked off, etc. Don’t think this one will leak inside the Forney Museum of Transportation in Denver, Colorado.
