1957 Chrysler New Yorker at Recent Lonestar Round Up

Written by Ken Altes

Virgil Exner’s “Forward Look” 1957 New Yorker had a 392 cu in Hemi V8 pushing 325 hp through its TorqueFlite 3-speed auto trans. Torsion bar front suspension, Torsion-Aire, gave great ride and handling. Quad headlamps were optional.

  1. Federal lighting laws were changing for the ’57 model year cars. Chrysler played that very cautiously as they could not be sure when each state would ratify the federal change. So on the salesman’s order forms, either single (2 total) or dual (4 total) headlights could be ordered installed during assembly. California was one of the states that was late approving the new law. Some early ’57 Chryslers and DeSotos got the two light system there. It was still fairly early in ’57 production when the dual headlamps became standard for all ’57 Chryslers and DeSotos.

  2. Wayne, I didn’t know of the states’ ratifications of the new rules. Good stuff. Thanks.

  3. This post has thrown new perspective on the topic, well done.
