I’ve heard of two-speed automatics. Is it really possible to pull a first gear to, what? 20mph and then the second all the way? Sounds incredible to me. Of course that’s coming from someone with a 5-speed manual.
Seems weird but Chevy, for one, used a two speed Powerglide from 1950 through 1973. My Mom had a 64 Cutlass with a 326 cu.in. V8 that I drove a lot, and it had a two speed auto. A torque converter multiplied low speed torque, allowing a pretty tall first gear. Some of these cars could go to 70 mph or so in first gear. The Dynaflow Buick used from 1947 to 1963 had two gears but only used the top gear unless the lower one was manually selected. They were slow.
